We are Walking Maine 2018

Saturday, September 29 from 1:00 - 2:30pm

Greetings to all SMVA members and friends,

You are all invited to share your ideas and suggestions about the future of the Southern Maine Volkssport Association on Saturday, September 29 from 1:00 - 2:30pm. The meeting will be held at the Mason-Motz Activity Center, 190 Middle Road, Falmouth - corner of Middle Road (Route 9) and Lunt Road. It is a low red brick building.

Come early if you would like to socialize and/or eat your lunch. Meeting will begin at 1:00 pm and end no later than 2:30 pm. If you can't attend for the whole time, please come and share your thoughts for however long you can stay.

I hope we will get to all of the agenda items, but if we run out of time, we can plan another meeting, either in person or if necessary, by phone and/or email.

I. Annual Pot Luck Holiday Celebration - date and time need to be determined

A. We have a location - Toni and Dave Irish have agreed to have it at their house in Falmouth

B. It's OK to break tradition and not have it on 2nd Wednesday night

1. options: during the day on a weekend or perhaps during the week (daylight hours)

II. Year round and seasonal walks for 2019, including Appalachian Trail Walk - check flyer

III. Planning for 2019 - Traditional Walks. How ambitious can we be/how many volunteers to work?

A. Do you have a favorite walk from the past you would like to do again?

B. Suggestions:

1. Winter walk - could we do ME Mall on a week-end as a "Beat the Cabin Fever Blues"?

2. Spring walk - another Peony Garden or other (Mackworth Island?)

3. Summer walk - Snowy Egret Day? Probably too late to do seasonal walk there for '19

4. Fall walk - West Side Trail, Cousins Island, Yarmouth?

IV. Short discussion on Online Start Box and 2019 AVA Convention in Albany, NY

V. Other activities to keep the club together and/or how to recruit new members ??

A. My favorite: group walks to coincide with local festivities/events/concerts, etc

VI. Need publicity committee - how and where (and who) to promote our walks

WHEW!! Lots to think about - please put your thinking caps on!

Pre-registration not required but appreciated via phone (207) 774-3415 or via email at

Hope to hear from you - Take care.

History of SMVA:

In the fall of 1983, four faculty members from Westbrook High School formed a volkssport club and sought membership in the American Volkssport Association. That was the beginning of the Southern Maine Volkssport Association. Plans were immediately set forth to hold their first walk in the spring of 1984.

In the early years, SMVA had the distinction of hosting a single event with the most walkers - 3500 walkers for the Eastern Prom/Peaks Island walk. SMVA was also honored with having one of the top ten walks in the United States - the Lighthouse Walk in South Portland in 1996. That walk still exists today and is enjoyed by many new walkers as well as repeat walkers.

Walk, talk, laugh, eat...the possibilities for fun are endless!

Our Mission

Volkssport events are organized to entice people of every age and all levels of athletic prowess to exercise outdoors at their own pace. ("Volkssport" is intended to mean "sport of the people".)  These non-competitive events may be walks, bikes, swims, or cross-country skis.  Most popular, however, are the walks - usually 10 or 5 kilometers on a well-marked trail with directions and a map to get you back where you started.

Walks are designed to include historic sites, scenic vistas, downtown areas, woodland trails, parks, or other points of interest.  Each walk is free.  However, those wishing to pay a $3.00 registration fee can participate in an international organization's achievement award program, which may provide some additional incentive for reluctant walkers to get out and exercise.  For an additional fee, those who finish may take home a small memento of their accomplishment.

In addition to exercise, these events provide a family-oriented social environment in which participants share the spirit of walking - meeting friends, walking scenic trails, and improving mental, as well as physical health, with a natural, accessible, low-stress activity.
